ZACK ! European AnimationFilmFestival

Veranstaltungs-Infos

With ZACK ! we want to bring the magic (ZAUBER) of ANIMATION and CARTOONS to the cinema (KINO) in the original version (with subtitles) and celebrate European animated film.

Nowadays, everyone is familiar with animated film, especially as cartoons, stop-motion or computer animated films. What is less well known is that the method of lining up photographic images was the forerunner of film technology.
The breakthrough in the direction of film came in 1872 with the photographer Eadweard Muybridge, who produced the first serial photographs of a galloping horse (in May, Reprodukt will publish ‘For a Fraction of a Second: The Moving Life of Eadweard Muybridge’ by Guy DELISLE).
With the silhouette film ‘The Adventures of Prince Achmed’ (to be shown with live music on 30 March 2025, at 3 pm, at the Metropolis cinema) Lotte Reiniger created the first long animated film in film history from 1923-1926 - ten years before Disney's first feature-length film ‘Snow White’ (1937) .
The various techniques of animated film have developed continuously and reached a new peak with computer technology. Today, the European production of animated film is multifaceted and an important economic factor in the film business. Many animated films are aimed specifically at an adult audience and are characterised by a special aesthetic.
We have put together a wide-ranging programme of short and feature-length films from Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain for you, with a festive opening as well as guests and talks on 11 and 12 April 2025.
